Organic and Fair from one source

"Organic agriculture only has a future if farmers can make a living from their work, otherwise the consequence will be the same as what we see all too often in conventional agriculture: numerous farms dying out because the fall in prices is depriving growers of their livelihood. In the South – but also here in Germany too – fair partnerships need to be created to ensure that the very basis of our food supply continues to exist. Many of Naturland’s partners have already committed to this concept but have so far not been able to get the message over to the general public. Now, however, they are in a position to have their products, whether they are produced in Germany or anywhere else in the world, certifi ed by one single organisation:
With its standards on organic production, social principles and fair trade, Naturland is the fi rst organic association to cover all the three dimensions included in the concept of sustainability. I am proud that we have once again done the pioneering work. It is our objective to pave the way for ever more producers to fair markets, to encourage processors to commit to fair partnerships, and, last but not least, to convince the consumer of the merits of „organic and fair“ products."

Chairman of Naturland steering committee

History and objectives of Naturland’s fair trade certification

1986 saw the start of Naturland’s international projects, in collaboration with GEPA. In the years following, the fair trade organisations dwp and BanaFair became Naturland partners. The ensuing topics and challenges found their expression in many areas of Naturland’s work. The incorporation of significantly elaborated social standards into Naturland’s standards and finally the adaptation of fair trade criteria to the conditions prevailing in Germany were a logical consequence of this co-operation. In 2006 the first German processors who procured their raw goods from local sources were adjudicated for conformity with the “Naturland Criteria for Fair Trade Partnerships“ and commended for their fair business methods.

Together with the fair trade organisations, Naturland pursued the development of its criteria. The Naturland fair trade standards now produced are on the one hand a natural consequence of Naturland’s historical development and are the logical result of a long process of evolution. They define and expand on their precursor, the “Naturland Criteria for Fair Trade Partnerships”.  On the other hand they are based on the definition of FINE and the core principles of the fair trade organisations as they are described in the “Charter of Principles for Fair Trade” (WFTO and FLO 2009).

This far reaching decision to institute Naturland certification to fair trade standards was made in consequence of Naturland’s explicit intention to send a clear signal to society – and to the trading community. The work farmers do is of immense value. By offering certification to fair trade standards, Naturland aims to encourage processors and the trade to put the values laid down in the standards into practice and to get this message over to their customers. For Naturland, fair trade is not just a question of price but also includes the effect an enterprise has and the motivation it can give to its suppliers – the farmers -, its trading partners, its own employees and to society in general.

Naturland´s members and partners can choose between either:

- Fair trade certfification of a product and, for the first time ever, also
- Fair trade certification of their whole enterprise

The specific differences are described below:

These raw goods are clearly designated in the list of ingredients. Only those products certifi ed to Naturland fair trade standards may bear the “Naturland Fair” logo.

Naturland Fair trade corporate certification
Individual producers, growers‘ co-operatives and processors may all become Naturland fair partners. At least 70% of the products must be produced, processed or traded to Naturland fair trade standards.
