Organic Farm 350jpgOrganic aquaculture is taking on an increasingly important role in Vietnam. Besides the consistent growth in demand in Europe for organic seafood, another major reason for this development is the interest of the Vietnamese consumers themselves in clean and healthy products. This attitude also benefits organic agriculture in this south-east Asian country.

In light of this, Naturland was co-operating with the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and with German and Dutch development organisations in running a workshop on the development of the organic sector in Vietnam, the focus being on organic aquaculture. The main points of the meeting on 27th/28th March, 2017 in Cau Mau in southern Vietnam have been, among others:

  • Shrimps 250to identify the opportunities for co-operation available to stakeholders in the Vietnamese organic and seafood sector
  • to review the current situation of organic production in Vietnam
  • to draft strategies available and prospects for the expansion of organic production in Vietnam

Some 70 representatives from national and local administrative bodies, initiatives dealing with social and environmental policies, scientists, certification bodies, industrial organisations, seafood producers, development organisations, representatives of the trade and the media attended as well as Naturland Shrimp producer Seanamico, Camimex, Minh Phu and Binca - pioneer in the field of organic aquaculture in Vietnam.

Training farmer 250Shrimp farmer joining a trainigThe workshop simultaneously marks the commencement of a series of interlinked activities designed to encourage the development and reinforcement of the organic sector in Vietnam. Stakeholders at all levels are involved in the project. Naturland will be active in an advisory capacity by virtue of its history as a pioneer and driver of development in the field of organic aquaculture.

The workshop is being organised by the Directorate of Fisheries (D-Fish) in Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD), giz GmbH – a German company providing services worldwide in the field of international co-operation, SNV Netherlands Development Organisation in Vietnam and Naturland – Association for Organic Agriculture.
