Naturland initiated an open letter addressed to the Mexican president where numerous German and European honey importers were demanding that the Mexican authorities introduce effective measures to stop the cultivation of GMO soya on the Yucatan Peninsula. The initiative was met with great success. The letter was released on the World Bee Day on May 20th. The media response in Mexico was remarkable and the beekeepers were able to further promote their request. The letter to the President was forwarded to the Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and other government agencies involved in the approval process for GM soya and other genetically modified plants. The judges of the Federal Court in the city of Merida, who have to comment regarding the state of Yucatán as a GMO-free zone, were given the open letter personally by representatives of the Mayan communities. The three presidential candidates were also informed. National and international media took up the topic via the EFE news agency. For the Mayan beekeepers, many of whom are organized in the collective of the Mayan communities of the Los Chenes region in the state of Campeche, local media coverage was just as important. In addition to several newspapers and other media on the peninsula, state radio and television also reported on the initiative of the European honey importers.
