Frequently asked questions about becoming Naturland Fair.

THE PATH TO CERTIFICATION

  • GETTING ACQUAINTED

Initial discussion between the Naturland partner organisation (Naturland-certified producer or processor) and a Naturland representative about the company's situation in terms of social responsibility, fair trade and social commitment. Transparency is an essential prerequisite for Naturland Fair partnerships and involves providing information about equity holdings as well as an organisational chart.

  • DEVELOPING A MISSION STATEMENT

The Naturland partner organisation develops a mission statement with the help of its members. Where possible, it should describe matters relating to organic production, the local procurement of raw materials, social responsibility and fair trade. If the organisation already has a mission statement (or policy) recorded in writing, this can be shared with Naturland instead. Based on this mission statement, the organisation then drafts a Naturland Fair implementation strategy.

  • COMPLETION OF A SELF-ASSESSMENT FORM

The Naturland partner organisation responds to questions in the Naturland Fair self-assessment form. This should help the organisation to carefully consider each aspect of the Naturland Fair standards and their own objectives. It also helps them to prepare for the inspection.

  • INSPECTION REQUEST

The Naturland certification committee verifies the documents (the mission statement and completed Naturland Fair self-assessment form) and decides whether an on-site consultation is needed. It then requests an inspection by the inspection body.

  • INSPECTION

The Naturland Fair inspection is carried out by a trained inspection body and, where possible, as part of a regular Naturland Organic inspection.

  • CERTIFICATION

Once the Naturland certification committee has received the Fair inspection report regarding compliance with the Naturland Fair standards, it conducts an evaluation. If satisfied, they issue a Naturland Fair certificate alongside the Naturland Organic certificate.

The Naturland partner can then label and market its certified products with the Naturland Fair logo.

Frequently asked questions about becoming Naturland Fair

Here we have summarised the most frequently asked questions about the Naturland Fair supplementary certification. Our Naturland Fair contact person will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • 1. What is the Naturland Fair logo?

Fair trade requires clear rules and transparent communication. A strong and trustworthy logo is needed to make global equality, a commitment to fair trade and reliable trade partnerships more visible to the consumer.

That's exactly what the NATURLAND FAIR LOGO stands for: organic production and fair trade. Naturland Fair partners pay producers fair prices, cultivate long-term, collaborative trade relationships and treat quality assurance as a joint responsibility.

  • 2. How does the Naturland Fair logo differ from the Naturland logo?

The requirements for the NATURLAND FAIR LOGO go above and beyond the standards for the ordinary Naturland logo – they include fair trade in addition to organic and social conditions for production and processing. The same requirements apply in both the Global North and the Global South.

  • 3. How can I become Naturland Fair certified?

The NATURLAND FAIR LOGO is a voluntary, supplementary certification that existing Naturland-certified producers and processing companies can apply for.
If you would like to demonstrate your commitment to fair trade, please get in touch. As a first step, we will work with you to draft a Naturland Fair policy based on the following questions:
o Why did you decide to farm/work according to organic, social and fair principles?
o What do organic agriculture, social responsibility and fair trade mean for us?
o How would we define a reliable trade relationship?
These questions serve as a compass for both parties to develop an implementation strategy for your company in the next step.

  • 4. What does it mean to be a Naturland Fair partner?

NATURLAND FAIR PARTNER is an umbrella term for the extensive community of processors, retailers, importers, exporters, producer organisations, individual producers and companies with subcontracted producers who share a commitment to fair trade, organic farming and social responsibility.

You can find more detailed information about this in Section 1 of our Fair Standards: Basic principles of the Naturland Fair certification.

  • 5. How do Naturland Fair partners support their producers from around the world?

NATURLAND FAIR PARTNERS have a positive impact on the organic, social and economic development of PRODUCERS and their communities around the world.
NATURLAND FAIR PARTNERS afford PRODUCERS greater certainty in their planning by fostering a reliable, long-term trade relationship. They pay a fair price that covers the PRODUCERS’ production and living costs, and makes it possible for them and their employees to lead a dignified life. In order to reduce social, ecological and economic inequality around the world, NATURLAND FAIR PARTNERS also pay a premium for produce from countries in the Global South. These additional resources help PRODUCERS to improve their living conditions while also investing in organic farming methods and social responsibility.
With produce from the Global North, NATURLAND FAIR PARTNERS support producers and their employees in this region through their social commitments.

  • 6. What are the benefits of having a Naturland Fair certification?

More and more consumers are taking an interest in how and where their food is produced and want to consume organic and fair products. The NATURLAND FAIR LOGO enables you to clearly show your commitment to fair trade and organic production, and your social responsibility towards producers.

The Naturland Fair certification offers you an additional layer of quality assurance at the highest level and helps to minimise the risk of violations of basic social and organic standards in your supply chain.

The NATURLAND FAIR LOGO allows NATURLAND FAIR PARTNERS to demonstrate a real contribution towards implementing the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

SDG 8 - "Decent work and economic growth"
SDG 12 - "Responsible consumption and production"
    SDG 13 - "Climate action"
SDG 17 - "Partnerships for the goals"

  • 7. How does Naturland Fair differ from other fair trade standards?

The NATURLAND FAIR LOGO stands for fair trade around the world. In comparison to other fair trade standards, such as Fairtrade, Naturland also certifies produce from the Global North (e.g. Europe).

The NATURLAND FAIR LOGO stands for organic production, social responsibility and fair trade more than any other standard, all in one LOGO!

NATURLAND FAIR continuously expands and improves its standards and is regularly scrutinised in standard comparisons. The most comprehensive comparison with fair trade standards from around the world is currently the “International Guide to Fair trade Labels”. You can find out how NATURLAND FAIR was evaluated from page 60 onwards.

  • 8. Why does Naturland also certify companies in the Global North (e.g. Europe) as fair?

Whether they're in Spain, Greece or Germany, many farmers in Europe are fighting to survive. Small and medium-sized farms are especially hard hit. We lose 400,000 farms per year in the EU. What’s worse, is that family farms are the pillars of society in both the Global South and the Global North. They breathe life into our cultivated landscapes, promote biodiversity and create sustainable regional economies. For us, fair trade is a global movement – farmers should be able to make a living from their work no matter where they live. That’s why companies from all four corners of the globe can be Naturland Fair-certified, even if they are based in Europe. All they need to do is commit to being organic, social and fair!

ANCIENT POTATO VARIETIES FROM PERU

Another Naturland Fair-certified cooperative, AGROPIA, is situated in south west Peru. Its membership comprises around 90 families and its mission is to improve the quality of life of its members and their families in the long term by growing traditional varieties of potato. There are currently over 400 traditional potato varieties in Peru and AGROPIA is helping to preserve this important part of Peru's cultural heritage. Naturland Fair partner WeltPartner supports the cooperative by paying fair prices, providing a continuous sales outlet for their products and sustaining their diverse farm structures. Raising the profile of women, who make up 37 percent of their membership, and supporting them is also an important issue for AGROPIA. For example, various leadership roles within the cooperative are occupied by women.

COCOA AND PALM OIL FROM GHANA

The oil mill operated by Naturland Fair partner Serendipalm is situated in the east of Ghana. The mill procures its raw materials, palm oil and cocoa,  exclusively from the 600+ regional organic smallholders in Asuom and the surrounding area. They also help these farmers to convert to organic farming and continuously improve their soil fertility and yields. Unlike in conventional palm oil production, no forests are cleared for cultivation and the trees are not grown in monocultures. The forest is a mixture of commercial and mixed woodland. Serendipalm is a reliable long-term buyer and pays its farmers fair prices.

WILD COFFEE FROM ETHIOPIA

Ethiopia's Kaffa region is situated in the south-west of the country. This is where, in the depths of the thick mountain rainforest, the unique wild coffee variety of the same name grows. Local smallholders pick it by hand and often travel long distances in order to harvest a particular area of the forest. The coffee is harvested in harmony with the delicate ecosystem, with no trees or bushes being cut back. The commitment of Naturland Fair partner Original Food means that the smallholders can make a decent living from their work while preserving their livelihood. Original Food started the development project in 2003 and the region is now one of the world's first UNESCO biosphere reserves for coffee.

MILK, WINE AND BREAD FROM GERMANY

Naturland Fair partners in Germany such as the Berchtesgadener Land Dairy, the Hofpfisterei Bakery, BIOPILZHOF GmbH and the Seck Winery all support farmers by paying fair prices and they also get involved in a variety of regional projects. Family smallholdings are the pillars of our society. They breathe life into our cultivated landscapes, promote biodiversity and create sustainable regional economies. Certified Naturland Fair products such as milk, dairy produce, cold meats, eggs, baked goods, wine, fruit, vegetables and Christmas trees are all sourced in Germany, often directly from the farm.

OLIVES AND CEREALS FROM PALESTINE

In the Palestinian West Bank, Naturland Fair partner Canaan Fair Trade is working with the Palestine Fair Trade Association (PFTA) to revive sustainable farming practices in this disadvantaged region. The PFTA advises, trains and supports smallholders in the region that want to convert to organic farming. The Naturland Fair premiums also help to provide funding for various projects such as the creation of new women's cooperatives, scholarships for children from smallholder families and a "Trees for Life" programme. Just under 60,000 olive trees have been planted to enable young farmers to get into the olive oil market, regenerate the groves that were damaged by the Middle East conflict and forge an economic basis for the next generation.

COCONUT OIL FROM SRI LANKA

In Sri Lanka, Naturland Fair partner Serendipol processes coconuts to create a high-quality and intensely flavoured coconut oil. The coconuts are grown organically and harvested by around 1300 farmers. The complex task of processing is then carried out by over 180 experienced Serendipol employees. Serendipol guarantees its workers secure employment, a fair wage and fair premiums. This has made it possible for them to back initiatives such as building schools, improving the local health service and securing electricity supplies.

TEA AND SPICES FROM INDIA

Our tea producers in India are supported by our Naturland Fair partner Tea Promoters India (TPI). TPI owns eight tea gardens in the tea-growing regions of Darjeeling, Assam, Dooars and Kerala. Its core values include equality and employee participation. The workers and tea pickers are represented in a joint committee alongside the management team and can weigh in on decisions about social measures. Thirty years ago, Naturland worked with GEPA and TPI to establish the first certified organic tea garden in Darjeeling. Empowering smallholders is also a priority for Naturland Fair partner PDS Organic Spices when it comes to its wide range of activities. The organisation sees strengthening village communities, especially indigenous groups and women, as its core mission.

MUSCOVADO SUGAR FROM THE PHILIPPINES

Panay, one of the islands that makes up the Philippines, is home to a sugar mill operated by the Naturland Fair-certified cooperative Panay Fair Trade Center (PFTC). The cooperative has been supporting smallholders who produce organic muscovado sugar since 1991. The origins of the organisation are closely linked to the Philippine women's rights movement. As a result, the PFTC is very politically active. It promotes the interests of rural smallholders and gives women a voice. In addition to providing training, it also offers humane working conditions with a secure income that's both regular and fair.

PUMPKIN SEEDS FROM AUSTRIA

Austria is home to the Naturland Fair partner Schalk Mühle. The Styria-based company is a big believer in collaborating with regional suppliers and it procures its raw materials from small Naturland farms. Its work is centred around fair, long-term relationships with its farmers and a social commitment to its employees.

NUTS AND FRUIT FROM TURKEY

Situated on Turkey's Black Sea Coast, Naturland Fair partner IŞIK Tarim supports around 3500 smallholders in 150 village communities who work together as neighbours, just like in the olden days, as part of the "Happy Village Project". They grow hazelnuts and fruit, like apricots, using organic farming methods. IŞIK Tarim provides their farmers with self-made organic compost free of charge in order to improve their soil fertility in the long term. In addition to the harvest workers and their families, around 900 mostly female employees also benefit from fair trade by working in the processing plants. The organic produce is purchased directly by Naturland Fair partner WeltPartner. This plays a vital role in maintaining Turkey's traditional small-scale farm structures and prevents people from migrating away from rural areas.

CEREALS, VEGETABLES, FRUIT AND WINE FROM ITALY

Tuscany-based La Selva is a farm business and delicatessen that creates good long-term working conditions not only in farming, but also in processing and administration roles. As a Naturland Fair partner, La Selva also gets involved in school projects and promotes organic farming in the local area by working with universities. Further to the east of Italy, Naturland Fair partner TerraBio is nestled between the Adriatic coast and the Apennine mountain range. In addition to paying farmers a fair price, the TerraBio cooperative also donates produce to local and regional projects.

Naturland Fair is a product quality seal. We award our organic and fair farming logo to companies and producers that are committed to championing organic farming methods, social working conditions and fair cooperation.

  • 2. How does the Naturland Fair seal differ from the Naturland seal?

The Naturland Fair seal is a voluntary, supplementary certification that existing Naturland-certified producers and companies can apply for. The proportion of fair trade raw ingredients contained in Naturland Fair products made of several ingredients is indicated on the product packaging. It's always at least 50% and must be increased as and when more certified Naturland Fair ingredients become available. Naturland Fair products are always produced in accordance with our organic standards.

Our Motivation

Naturland Fair
Our Motivation

Our Motivation

Exploitative child labour, structural discrimination and prices that prevent farmers from making a living – do we really want to live in a world like this? There are still many challenges facing modern farming and indeed society as a whole. Here at Naturland, we want to help create a organic, social and fair world, and a level playing field for farmers on the international stage.

This is why we have partnered with committed fair trade organisations and companies such as Weltpartner eG, GEPA - The Fair Trade Company, BanaFair, Molkerei Berchtesgadener Land and many more, who campaign for a more sustainable world. With their help, we have developed the Naturland Fair certification, which puts fair, welfare-orientated, organic business practices at the top of the agenda. Naturland Fair combines the stringent Naturland standards with fair trade principles and is the highest organic and fair trade standard in the world.

DIVERSE COMMITMENTS TO REGIONAL COMMUNITIES

At the heart of our commitment to fair trade are the many partner companies and producers who live and breathe Naturland Fair every day. By displaying the seal and modifying their ways of working, they demonstrate their commitment to ensuring a good life for farmers, cooperating as partners and treating the world's resources with care.

In addition to paying fair prices and fostering long-term trade relationships, social engagement is a core element of what they do for local people in their area. For example, Naturland Fair partners and farms participate in educational projects, support smallholders in developing local infrastructures and promote regional value chains. Their involvement is as diverse as the world’s population. Their commitment makes it possible for us to fill our kitchen cupboards with organic and fair-trade bananas, tropical fruits, cocoa, spices, tea, coffee, milk, bread, wine, olives and much more.

As an international organic association, we are members of the German Fair Trade Forum (FFH), through which we campaign for fair trade practices and transparent supply chains. After all, a fair world can only be made possible with a joint commitment from everyone, from consumers and politicians, to producers and retailers.

HOW NATURLAND FAIR STARTED...

Naturland's international commitment began while working with GEPA in 1986. In the years that followed, the fair trade organisations WeltPartner eG and BanaFair became Naturland partners. The impact of these partnerships was felt in many areas of Naturland’s work. Incorporating more substantial social standards into the Naturland standards and ultimately adapting the Fair criteria to local circumstances were both logical consequences of these partnerships. Naturland started implementing their first fair trade projects in 2006 and eventually solidified its commitment in 2010 by launching the Naturland Fair certification.

...AND HOW IT'S CONTINUOUSLY DEVELOPED

We continuously work with fair trade organisations to expand and improve the Naturland Fair programme by incorporating topical issues, such as living wages, into our standards. While doing so, we always remain true to our core Naturland Fair values: organic, social and fair!
