Organic in Morocco:
Support for the Moroccan organic sector

With a share of 14 percent of GDP, the agricultural sector is one of the most prominant economic sectors in Morocco. Around 40 percent of Moroccans make their living in this sector. While agriculture in Morocco is facing great challenges in terms of sustainability, such as water scarcity, organic farming accounts for less than 1 percent of the entire sector.

Naturland provides support and advisory services to the Moroccan organic sector and its association FIMABIO as they develop their organisation with a view to enhancing the organic sector in this North African country and creating new jobs. The project is part of a special initiative for training and employment supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

A core element of the project will be a series of training courses provided by Naturland for future trainers on how to apply organic farming standards and sustainable irrigation techniques as well as measures for adapting to climate change. In addition to this, Naturland plans to organise workshops with companies in Morocco to discuss certification systems and to develop marketing strategies for national and international markets. tThe project also includes public relations training as the project also aims to raise awareness of and provide information on organic agriculture and food among Moroccan consumers.
