In the focus: The Naturland representatives in the Americas

In the second instalment of our series on the international Naturland delegates and WAB members, we turn to the Americas. Naturland currently has over 130 members in 15 countries across North-, Central- and South America. These members represent more than 19,000 organic producers, primarily small-scale farmers organised in cooperatives.

From maple syrup production in Canada to sugar cane cultivation in Argentina, Naturland members cover a remarkable range of production systems, products, and farming communities. This includes, among other things:

  • Agroforestry: Coffee and cacao are important cash crops in Central- and South America. Permanent tropical crops such as mango and banana, too, are cultivated in agroforestry systems.
  • Aquaculture: Western White shrimp are cultivated in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Honduras and Peru.
  • Apiculture: Beekeepers in Brazil, Guatemala, Mexico and Nicaragua produce organic honey.
  • Sustainable fisheries: Scup, summer flounder and black sea bass are caught along the east coast of the United States.
  • Wild collection: Bat-friendly agave production is practised in Mexico.

Naturland members in the Americas are encouraged to connect with the regional representatives listed below to discuss local working conditions, address shared challenges, and strengthen collaboration within the Naturland network. Biodiversity, water management and cost-covering ex-farmgate prices for small- and medium-sized farms

I am

  • an international delegate and WAB member.
  • managing director at Pronatur S.A.C.
  • specialized in the value chains of mangoes, bananas, avocados, passionfruit and coffee.
  • a part of Naturland as a certified member since 2002.

🥑 In the late 1990s, I certified an ecological and sustainable family farming operation with processing facilities for exports to Germany and Switzerland. This began as a five-hectare family farm.

🥑 Naturland is unique in that it includes complete biodiversity, non-deforestation, ecological agriculture and social criteria in its scheme.

🥑 Topics that are particularly important to me include biodiversity (carbon footprint and animal protection), water management (water footprint) and ensuring that small- and medium-sized farms receive cost-covering ex-farmgate prices. This includes cooperative group farming as well as individual private farming units.

🥑 As a delegate, I especially want to address

  • the communication and interpretation of the new EU regulation and the harmonization of standards,
  • water management plan development in different ecological regions and geographical locations, as well as updated revisions of global water sources, and
  • mapping of old-growth forest areas.

Significant environmental and social challenges require positive and responsible action

I am

  • an international delegate and WAB member.
  • co-founder and executive director of La Grama.
  • specialized in the value chains of ginger, turmeric and limes.
  • connected with Naturland since 2015, when La Grama became a member through our ginger and turmeric farm located in the Peruvian mountain jungle.

🫚 When we acquired our farm in early 2009, we realized that the way it had been managed in the past was not the most appropriate. From the beginning, we started implementing organic practices to restore soil health, increase biodiversity and strengthen the natural processes that sustain a farm ecosystem, always with respect for our workers and the surrounding community.

Organic farming represented the right path for us, so aligning with Naturland’s principles felt natural. After more than 15 years working under these values, I am confident that it was the right decision.

🫚 The motto of La Grama is “Organic is not enough.” Since our foundation in 2006, this phrase has guided our values as a company. In the region where we operate, there are significant environmental and social challenges that require positive and responsible action.

🫚 La Grama has a written purpose that our team lives every day: we do not simply sell organic ginger, turmeric or limes - we provide quality, promote health and we improve people’s lives. This is a bold statement that defines our mission and the reason we get out of bed every morning.

🫚 For me, it is especially important to raise awareness about the realities in our region and to promote the values we share with Naturland: strengthening farming systems, expanding organic principles and improving the quality of life of farming communities.

🫚 As the only ginger and turmeric farm currently certified under Naturland standards in Peru, there is a great opportunity to support more farmers in strengthening their systems and complying with the organic and social principles we defend.

Promoting animal welfare, environmental sustainability, and reducing the industry's carbon and water footprints

I am

  • a WAB member.
  • Chief Sustainability Officer at Seajoy Group/ Cooke Aquaculture.
  • specialized in the production and processing of organically farmed shrimp.
  • connected to Naturland through our organic shrimp farm, which has been Naturland certified for 12 years.

🦐 The switch to organic farming and Naturland certification was made to develop a more environmentally sustainable aquaculture, satisfy the aquaculture market and influence the global aquaculture industry.

🦐 As a WAB member, I would like to contribute my experience in the aquaculture industry and in environmental sustainability. The topics I would like to promote at Naturland are animal welfare, criteria for stunning during harvest, environmental sustainability, and reducing the industry's carbon and water footprints.
